Luxury Western Accommodations in Ukraine's Capital

Finally, Ukraine's capital plays host to a western-style five star hotel. The Hyatt Regency Kyiv has set new standards that may be difficult for new hotels to follow.

In June 2007, the glamorous Hyatt Regency Kyiv finally opened its doors to the public. The word "luxury" may be a gross understatement of the Hyatt when compared to other Kyiv hotels. This place is the true definition of western opulence. With the lowest priced rooms starting at $430 US per night, this place is definitely not for the budget traveler.

At first, the flashy glass facade seems very much out of place on Tarasova Street, overlooking historic St. Sophia Square. Yet, somehow, this modern architectural design quietly blends in to its older surroundings. Once you step inside, however, it seems as if you are no longer in a former Soviet republic. The hotel sports an ultramodern atrium lobby that will leave you speechless. The rooms sport all the finest amenities you could expect to find in a hotel. Yes, it looks like the modern world has finally encroached upon Kyiv's "Old City."

Rooms

Where do you start when describing the rooms in this hotel? The basic Guestroom is quite comfortable at 35 square meters in size, with either one king or two twin beds and a separate work area. A few other features include a 25-inch or larger TV with cable/satellite channels, high-speed internet access, a marble bath, 24-hour room service, etc. There is even an in-room safe with an electrical outlet inside so you can store and charge your laptop.

Just in case you forgot the above description was for the most basic room, the hotel has other rooms (234 total), including 25 suites ranging in size from 70 - 210 square meters with a plethora of extra luxurious amenities.

Hotel Location

The Hyatt Regency Kyiv is located in the center of the city, two blocks from Independence Square and famous Kreschatik Street with its many shops and restaurants. Also within easy walking distance are St. Sophia's Cathedral, St. Michael's Monastery, St. Andrew's Church and Andriivsky Uzviz.

Hotel Bars and Restaurants

Upscale expectations at a Hyatt Regency hotel do not stop at the rooms and service. Hyatt restaurants often receive the highest ratings and reputation in their locales. Highlighting premium meats and seafood, Grill Asia features an elegant selection of European and Asian dishes. The restaurant has two "open-show" kitchens where you can watch the chefs prepare your meal, unless you are distracted by the vibrant, sleek surroundings.

For a toned down, but still elegant experience, stop by the Lobby Lounge for a wide selection of snacks and light meals. Bar on 8 overlooks St. Sophia's Cathedral and offers simple dishes such as salads, sandwiches, steaks, and desserts. Finally, Brunello, the first wine bar in Kyiv, offers a large selection of fine Italian wines.

Room Rates

Will You Still Be Able to Afford Souvenirs? If you have to ask this question, then you know the answer. As previously mentioned, the lowest priced rooms start around $430 US per night. In case you want one of the fanciest rooms in the hotel, rates are currently not available for the Presidential Suite, but the Diplomat Suite will run you approximately $1,830 US per night. Most tourists, as well as Ukrainians, will not be able to afford a room at this hotel, but some western tourists and business travelers will revel in the luxurious lodgings. Kyiv has never seen anything like this.
